Please Stop Talking About Hyperspin! There's not much to say about this, actually. It's just too bad that the 'I'm taking legal action!' thread is still going strong. I don't know if it has anything to do with the following posts in that same thread, but I also don't believe they help at all. Every time someone says something along these lines, it's like a feeding frenzy of people running around trying to make things worse for Daphne instead of giving some solutions somewhere on the site for this problem...Everyone needs to stop talking about hyperspin1. 0.daphne in this thread! I'm going to make a new topic for this issue in the music software forums, and I hope everyone will join in. So long, and thanks for all the fish! And another thing... this is not legal advice. I don't think Daphne broke any laws with this work. I believe there are even some court cases in the US that define what is and isn't a derivative work, and I'm pretty sure this falls outside the definitions. I don't think there is an actual law against reverse engineering code to create your own derivative works, especially for non-commercial purposes. However, you should consult a lawyer if you have legal questions that go beyond what I've said here. If she plans on releasing a new version, she needs to use a different name for it so that people can easily distinguish between these two versions. The name she goes with should be something like "My New Grooveshark Player v1.0.0.6" or "My New Grooveshark Player (and 1-2-3-4) v1.0". I'm not quite sure whether or not it's possible to license your reverse engineered code under the CC-BY 3.0, though I think it's possible if you take the time to scour the web for all the possibilities and try hard enough to get it right or pay anyone $20 an hour to do so for you... The real reason why Daphne's program is so popular is because, in her own words, "I got really good at reverse-engineering the Grooveshark protocol." I believe this is an understatement. If anything, it should be "I reverse-engineered the protocol to create a usable player with only about 20% of the available features." Maybe she was able to work around Grooveshark's restrictions by using their own sites against them; for example, when Grooveshark prevented downloading by using non-Mozilla browsers (for obvious reasons), Daphne disabled support for non-Mozilla browser... this may or may not be legal. eccc085e13
